Why being a data scientist is awesome!

In the last video, we talked about why you should not be a data scientist. If you still think that data science could be the right career path for you then this video is for you! In this video, we’re going to flip it around and talk about why being a data scientist is awesome! Which I clearly think it is since I’m here talking to you still as a full time data scientist 🙂

About me

Hi, my name is Tina and I’m a data scientist at a FAANG company. I was pre-med studying pharmacology at the University of Toronto until I finally accepted that I would make a terrible doctor. I didn’t know what to do with myself so I worked for a year as a research assistant for a bioinformatics lab where I learned how to code and became interested in data science. I then did a masters in computer science (MCIT) at the University of Pennsylvania before ending up at my current job in tech 🙂

  1. "Are you indecisive and can't figure out what you want to be when you grow up… even though you already might be grown up?"

    That's me

  2. You're such good cheer to watch…taking away anxiety of the unknown and adding such positive vibes to people like myself😊😊😊

  3. What field should I take to become a data scientist with a bachelors degree?
Is it computer science or IT or computer engineer? Please advise.

  4. Hey Tina, idea for a YouTube video if you have not already seen this.

The part where Data Science can be applicable to every field (@3:32), it is not only that it can be used in every field.

But there is a meta-analysis study called

The gist here is if one learns programming, it creates a transfer learning effect where a "In other words, programming makes an individual smarter cognitively in all areas of thinking.

P.S Thank you for your channel and your cat partner is entertaining.

  5. I think I'm in love with you. You're gorgeous and so smart that makes me look at you as that hot super smart and beautiful engineer. Love you, great content @Tina Huang

  6. Hi Tina! been following you for a month now. I really like your videos. If I may ask, would it be possible for someone who hasn't have a degree to land a job as a data scientist with certificates? Although I understand that having a degree will give you an edge.

    Thanks!

  7. Hello everyone! A dumb question: what is the website shown at 1:34? Thank-you Tina for the insights, and thanks to whomever will provide feedback!

  8. Why don’t you only use your knowledge and skills for your own business decisions? Trust me, if you borrow money, they will understand your financial maths and objectives. I find they ask a lot of not meaning things for a job. Find their mistakes from other data scientists to get advantage when they are talking about their exceptional career and cash. If they ask about you, only tell you are a simple computer scientist. You don’t need to explain you are studying maths, finance and economical science for 15 years without any social life because you only dream about money.

  9. Hi Tania. I am in Canada. I have a PhD in Mathematics. I am a little short of programming skills. I am not sure how to transition because self study does not work for me considering my circumstances. Shall I go for a Masters in Data Science or do a Bootcamp with UofT

  10. What kinda person can be a data scientist? Really sorry for the weird que. Just im confused whether i should coose this or not cz i haven't been that a dedicated person when it comes to studies so far

  11. So to sum up the key points from both videos (though definitely don't skimp on watching the videos!) …

Reasons TO become a data scientist:
    – Decent salary / perks
    – Freedom to explore / discover
    – Applicable to any industry
    – You'll never get bored
    – You can often specialise / define your own niche
    – It's easy to transfer to other roles
    (this one – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DoFZtsV25Zw)

Reasons NOT to become a data scientist:
    – You aren't interested in blending compsci, stats and business skills
    – You're not okay with being scrappy
    – You don't like constantly learning
    – You don't have a healthy respect for the scientific method / truth
    – You're not comfortable with marketing yourself
    (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOZ8MxFw8TQ)

Thanks for helping to put this all in perspective – you explain things really well and insightfully!

  12. I'm currently self-studying to become a Programmer / Web developer…so I guess my one question would be
    Is there a DEMAND for Data Scientists?…I'm 50 yrs old this year…can I still attempt it?…and do I need "education"?..a Bachelor's or something?…

  13. Hi Tina! Your story really inspired me because I am in a similar situation haha. I am a third year biochemistry student, and after switching from a goal of pre-med to phd in research in organic chemistry, I decided to look to bioinformatics, and now Data Science. Your channels has helped solidify my goal of going for a Data Science Master's, and I find your videos very helpful for information. I'd like to connect on LinkedIn for advice 🙂

  14. Thanks Tina !! I am a biologist, and i am thinking to migrate to the data science area, let's see what will happen

  15. Oh my goodness can I just say that the Mr. Krabz interview HAD ME IN TEARS…. I shouldn't have laugh as hard as I did
