Most computer systems come with a hard disk drive (HDD) installed as the primary storage device. There is, however, an alternative, which is becoming increasingly popular, and that is to install a solid state drive (SSD) instead. So, what’s the difference, and which one is best?

An HDD consists of spinning disks (or platters) on which data is stored magnetically. Data is accessed by reading the disk with a head that is magnetically attracted to the disk surface. The head ‘floats’ on a very thin cushion of air, so it doesn’t actually touch the disk surface.

An SSD also uses magnetic attraction to store data, but instead of using spinning disks, it uses interconnected flash-memory chips. Data is transferred to and from an SSD much faster than it is with an HDD.

There are several advantages of SSDs over HDDs. One is that SSDs use less power, which extends battery life in laptops. They are also less likely to be damaged by physical shocks (such as being dropped), since there are no moving parts. SSDs are also quieter and faster than HDDs, which is why they’re often used in high-performance gaming laptops.

The main disadvantage of SSDs is that they’re more expensive than HDDs. A 1TB SSD can cost up to three times as much as a 1TB HDD.

So, which one should you choose? If you want the best performance and you don’t mind paying a bit more, then go for an SSD. If you want to save some money, then an HDD will do the job just as well.
