I didn’t really have a chance to report much on the DevOps Connect: cdSummit SoCal we held late last year. The event featured a full day of some great DevOps, CD/CI sessions. It was co-produced with CloudBees and IBM, with SauceLabs, Sonatype, Sumo Logic and JFrog joining as sponsors. For me, the highlight of the day was John Willis on Kata. It was the headline presentation of the day.

If you are lucky enough to have caught John’s presentation on this before, good for you. According to John, there really is not a good recording of him presenting this. Hearing that, we ran out and bought a video camera to capture what I think is one of John’s classic presentations and one that is very important to understanding DevOps.

For those who don’t know, Kata is about how Toyota became a world power in auto manufacturing by following lean principles and other teachings of Deming. Sometimes called the patron saint of DevOps, Deming is certainly a hero to John and many others in the DevOps movement. But I think it is John’s unique style that really makes this presentation such a classic.
